Week 2

Final story and treatment roles

We discuss and evaluate the ideas together, and we came to the final story. We decided to chose the clown storyline and combine with Kay's psychological doors idea.

Here is the refine plot:

In a place like a garage sale, a cocky, arrogant character (live actor) walks by and steal/kick/knock over some stuffs when no one is looking. Then they encounter a clown statue and they kick the clown stuff, throw its hat and mock it. However when he turns around and walk away, the clown come to life and begin to follow him.

The person noticed this and ran. The clown chase them into an alleyway/door which lead them to the clown’s room (cg back ground). In the room was a table with many bowls and clown hat. Instructions on the board tell them that if they guess the bowl with the hat right, they can leave. The bowls levitate then cover the hat and swap quickly.

The person pick the wrong bowl then got jump scare by clown and ran to a door where they see a memory where they were being a bad person. Ex: ruin their sister's doll, hurt animals, bully someone. Then the light turns off and on again to reveal the clown, who hurt the person the same way they hurt other people as punishment. Ex: they hit someone with a bat -> the clown will also hit them with a bat. The second time they also got wrong bowl and was also punished.

Fortunately, third time they got it right and they learnt their lesson, feeling repentant and seeks forgiveness. The clown take the hat pointing at a door. They walk through, and return back to the real world, becoming a better person.

  • The plot can be change or refine more in the future as well

For the animation students in the group, I've assigned everyone with roles for the project's treatment according to their abilities and strength:

  • Lynn & Sheryl: turnaround, environment sketches design, props design, dynamic pose, color variations, cover page

  • Anh: storyboard, moodboard, facial expression

  • Nara: synopsis & 1 dynamic pose

  • All: development sketches (1 each) + references with credits and analysis

Here are our evil clown development sketches:

We decided to use my clown character design since it looks the scariest, yet simple, which is suitable for our story and for the 3D process like modelling, texturing, and rigging. We add some details and combining traits of the other designs to make the final clown character to look more interesting.

Here is the final design:
